Amalfi was once a seafaring Republic, rivalling Genoa, Venice
and Pisa, from the ninth to the eleventh centuries. Today that
competitiveness is exemplified by their participation in the Trophy
of the Four Ancient Maritime Republics; a Regatta held each May
Near the waterfront
is the piazza del Duomo and the ninth century Cathedral of Saint
Andreas (St. Andrew), whose remains are said to be buried in the
last century and superbly maintained, this fine Cathedral reflects
Amalfi's original importance.
Starting at the Piazza del Duomo there is a pleasant scenic walk
to the Molini Valley (Valley of the Mills) where paper mills were
established in early times, introducing paper to Italy.
From the Piazza, alleys
lead under white arches where curious little shops display ceramics
ranging from huge jars to small jugs, all glowing with the appealing
colours and designs of the region.
Positano represents the Mediterranean at her most magnificent,
enticingly dressed in her finest with lush deep green vegetation,
calm, clear blue seas and a temperate climate. Every traveller
to the steep village of Positano will be seduced by the glorious
picture of houses, towers, churches, branch-shaded streets, winding
stairways, picturesque corners, orange groves - the ultimate romantic
Ravello, a rural
village unspoilt by tourism, perched on top of the mountain cliff
situated above Amalfi and Minori. Ravello, being famous for its
breath-taking views, natural beauty and ancient monuments are
presented at their best in the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa
Naples was founded
in 600 BC by the Greeks and then the Romans tookover in 320 BC.
On our tour we will visit the famous Archeological Museum, where
most of the treasures from Pompei and Ercolano have been transferred.

Pompeii, with its unbelievable

who want to rediscover and admire the splendour of Roman times.
To understand better the cause of the destruction our visit continues
to the imponent volcano Vesuvius, still active but innocuous (as
the scholars maintain), which dominates the beautiful Bay of Naples.
Visit of the Sorrento area by car (or minibus) among orange and
lemon-trees. Many stops for photos on the way (terraces of Massalubrense,
